Director of Communications (m/f/div)
The Hertie School in Berlin prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. The school offers master's programmes, executive education and doctoral programmes, distinguished by interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching, as well as outstanding research. Its extensive international network positions it as an ambassador of good governance, characterised by public debate and engagement. The school was founded in 2003 by the Hertie Foundation, which remains its major funder. The Hertie School is accredited by the state and the German Science Council.
The Hertie School seeks to fill the following position as soon as possible:
Director of Communications (m/f/div)
on a full-time basis (40 hours/week)
As a rule, the initial contract will be set for a two year period with the option of a permanent contract thereafter. The position reports directly to the Acting President of the Hertie School, Professor Mark Hallerberg, PhD.
Your tasks:
- Lead the communications team of the Hertie School, including the organization of signature events such as graduation and the opening of the Academic Year
- Develop and execute an internal and external communications strategy that promotes the Hertie School's mission of active engagement for the common good - promoting the work of our faculty and students in research, teaching and outreach activities
- Promote the work of the university through regular media appearances, and maintain a comprehensive database of key stakeholders
- Oversee and manage the communications and marketing budget
- Provide strategic input into a major cross-European initiative where the Hertie School takes the lead on communications
- Actively cooperate with stakeholders and departments across the Hertie School, such as faculty, Centres of Competence, Executive Education, Recruitment and Admissions, students, and alumni
Your profile:
- Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field
- 7+ years of professional experience in directly relevant areas, including several years of team leadership experience
- We expect an excellent understanding of:
- all relevant communications channels, including knowledge of the national and international media landscape and social media
- all relevant marketing channels, tools and campaigns;
- higher education in an international context
- High interest in public policy and profound knowledge of the relevant debates, forums and actors at the national, European and global levels
- Strong network among journalists and media outlets
- Excellent interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills and creativity
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to work independently and to manage team plus multiple ongoing projects
- Excellent communication and writing skills at near native level in both English and German
- High proficiency with standard software applications and database management
