The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is an international non-profit organisation that has been working to protect the natural environment and uphold human rights worldwide for over 20 years through field based investigations, high-impact films, support and training for activists and communities across the globe and high-level advocacy.
This role will lead EJF’s climate campaigns in the German context. You will be working towards our Germany-specific goals and supporting the work of EJF’s global climate team, including work streams on Loss and Damage, climate refugees and the EU and German energy transition.
EJF uses field-based evidence to provide the evidence necessary to drive advocacy for policy changes with governments and improved corporate sustainable and human-rights compatible practices.
Position overview:
Our climate campaign is raising awareness of, and driving advocacy to address, the interconnections between the climate crisis and human rights worldwide. EJF’s climate work addresses questions of climate justice on various levels. Key areas are decarbonization, including fossil fuel phase out and carbon pricing, climate refugees and related legal, political and social implications and Loss and Damage, including increased provision of accessible climate finance.
We advocate for environmental and climate justice, promoting action for the recognition of the right – for all communities – of a safe, sustainable environment.
Given the EU specific and broader global importance of German government policies and German industry activities, EJF has identified its work in Germany as a core organisational priority.
We are looking for an outstanding professional with a strong understanding of German, European and international climate policy. You will bring expert analysis, a profound knowledge of environmental and climate justice issues, together with creative strategic and tactical thinking. Together with this you will be able to deliver compelling reports, make connections across EJF’s campaigns and will have a deep commitment to EJF’s mission and goals.
Key responsibilities:
In consultation with the German Country Programme Manager and for approval by the CEO undertake the following:
- Research, develop and implement campaign strategies for our climate campaigns in close collaboration with EJF colleagues and partners
- Research and write high-calibre reports and briefings on specific issues, including topics related to climate change mitigation and climate justice
- Help to research, build and maintain EJF’s network of relevant German policymakers and strategic allies from civil society, industry and other sectors to increase EJF's reach. Direct outreach, engagement and advocacy with senior policy-makers, Government agencies; industry and civil society actors will be central to your role
- Monitor and identify opportunities in relation to policy developments; develop and implement creative approaches and effective ways of reaching out to policy-makers
- Work with the EJF communications team to build relationships with relevant media to disseminate EJF findings and recommendations; writing press releases, blogs and news stories
- Oversee translations, campaign films and other campaign materials
- Report regularly, in detail to CEO and the management team
What you bring:
- At least 3 years of proven professional experience in research and political advocacy or public relations in the areas of climate, environment, human rights or other relevant policy fields
- In-depth understanding of German, European and international climate policy, environmental and human rights-related policies
- Very good language skills in German (mother tongue) as well as fluency in English (C2)
- Excellent writing skills, enabling you to convert information into readable content, tailored to specific audiences
- You are a superb public speaker
- Very good organisational and time management skills and great sense for detail and accuracy of content. You are able to deliver, high-calibre documents, that are robust under close scrutiny, at speed and on-schedule
- Creativity and commitment to finding new ways to develop our work and engage the public with our messages
- High level of reliability, determination and seif-motivation as well as the ability to work effectively with a small, dynamic and international team
- You are a good diplomat, negotiator and have strong interpersonal skills
- You have a very clear, strong and demonstrable commitment to EJF's mission and goals and a passion to achieve positive change to protect our natura) world.
Desirable skills:
- Specific work experience on at least one of the following issues: Loss and Damage, climate refugees or energy transition
- Profound knowledge of research methods and approaches
- Experience with leveraging multimedia communications for advocacy aims
